As of 6 Nov 2026, the panel rates NetBird 2/5 and Tailscale 3.5/5 in Business VPN & Zero Trust Access. Weighted by what each judge cares about, 0 of the 6 judges pick NetBird and 6 pick Tailscale. NetBird scores higher on 1 of 7 criteria (European sovereignty). Tailscale scores higher on 6 of 7 criteria (Access model & connectivity, Identity, access policy & device posture, Pricing transparency, plus 3 more). Provenance — NetBird: EU-Made; Tailscale: Rest of world. Ratings are the AI panel’s opinion, formed from public evidence: how scores are made.
Tailscale takes the lean from six of six judges on access and connectivity at 7.8 versus 3.3, identity and policy at 8.0 versus 3.5, visibility and audit at 7.2 versus 1.3, deployment and administration at 7.2 versus 3.3, architecture and assurance at 7.0 versus 5.2, and pricing transparency at 6.5 versus 2.0. Weighted totals: Tailscale 6.5–7.3, NetBird 3.4–4.9. Sovereignty is the exception — NetBird's 7.3 versus 3.8 draws six of six leans on EU/EEA personal-data processing, AWS hosting restricted to EU/EEA servers and published subprocessor locations, though authentication runs through Auth0 in the USA under standard contractual clauses; Tailscale's verdict records a US contracting chain, processing in Canada, Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom, and no public information on EU hosting. NetBird's judges themselves split 0–4 on visibility and audit and 2–5 on deployment and administration. We declare no overall winner: those opposite leans are the answer.
Choose NetBird if
You need personal data processed in the EU/EEA and application hosting on AWS restricted to EU/EEA servers — the sovereignty column leans six of six toward NetBird (7.3 versus 3.8).
Your compliance review requires subprocessors published with locations and a referenced data processing agreement — NetBird's verdict records both.
You contract under German law with a Berlin-based vendor — NetBird GmbH of Berlin contracts under German law.
You can accept user authentication running through Auth0 in the USA under standard contractual clauses in exchange for EU/EEA data processing.
Choose Tailscale if
You need default-deny access control with MFA inherited from your own identity provider and SCIM group sync — identity and policy leans six of six toward Tailscale (8.0 versus 3.5).
You need public per-user prices before committing — pricing transparency leans six of six toward Tailscale (6.5 versus 2.0); Personal is $0, Standard $8 per user per month, Premium $18 per user per month, Enterprise is contact sales.
Your team runs site connectivity through subnet routers and wants an API on every plan — access and connectivity (7.8 versus 3.3) and deployment and administration (7.2 versus 3.3) each lean six of six toward Tailscale.
You need tamper-detectable double logging and traffic-event visibility, and a fixed 90-day configuration-log cap meets your retention needs — visibility and audit leans six of six toward Tailscale (7.2 versus 1.3).
You need SOC 2 Type II attestation and published cryptography detail, and audits available on request fit your process — architecture and assurance leans six of six toward Tailscale (7.0 versus 5.2).

The MSP Technician
Senior technician at an IT service provider in Hamburg that looks after thirty clients, from tax advisers to a dental chain. Each client has its own remote access, set up by whoever was on site that year. Wants one console with a tenant per client, gateways and users added in minutes, access logs a client can be shown after an incident, billing per tenant, and prices per user that can be quoted without calling the vendor first.

Criterion by criterion
Access model & connectivity
NetBird
The vendor presents NetBird as a business VPN and zero trust access service, and the terms describe optional hosted reverse proxy services that facilitate connectivity between devices, networks, services and the public internet on a shared, best-effort basis with quotas and fair-use limits. Beyond that we found no public information on the protocol, client platforms, gateway or relay locations, site-to-site links or per-resource access.
Tailscale
A WireGuard mesh with peer-to-peer links and relay fallback, NAT traversal over STUN and ICE with no inbound firewall rules, subnet routers doing site-to-site between offices and cloud environments, split DNS with MagicDNS, a Kubernetes operator and app connectors, and clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, ChromeOS and even Apple TV. High-availability subnet router failover is documented and the protocol and cipher choices are published in real detail. The relays are described only as running in "multiple regions" rather than named ones, and we found no public information on always-on auto-connect, published throughput figures, or clientless browser access for contractors.
Identity, access policy & device posture
NetBird
The trust page lists role-based access control, multi-factor authentication, user access reviews and a password policy as established controls. We found no public information on single sign-on with the major identity providers, SCIM or directory sync, group policies per resource, or device posture checks.
Tailscale
Access hangs off our own identity provider rather than shared keys: SSO with any SAML or OIDC provider including Google, Microsoft, Okta and GitHub, MFA inherited from that provider, SCIM user and group sync so a leaver drops out, default-deny grants and ACLs, device posture from operating system version, custom attributes and EDR/MDM tools like CrowdStrike, just-in-time access tied to posture, and policy as code through GitOps or the API. Machine certificates are described as keys belonging semi-permanently to the device rather than hardware-bound, and we found no public information on emergency revocation procedures.
Logs, audit trail & incident response
NetBird
We found no public information on connection or access logs, an admin audit trail, retention periods per plan, active-session views, or export and streaming to a SIEM; the captured pages on traffic-event logging and event streaming gave me nothing I could rely on.
Tailscale
After an incident I can show a client who did what: configuration audit logs with action, actor, target and time on by default, filterable in the console; network flow logs that strictly exclude traffic contents; streaming to named SIEM tools including Splunk and Datadog; SSH session recording; and double logging on both endpoints that makes tampering detectable. The catch for incident response is that configuration logs are kept for only 90 days and that period cannot be configured in place, and we found no public information on alerting on unusual access.
Deployment, API & administration
NetBird
Support runs through Slack, GitHub and a status page, defects go to an email address, and the terms allow weekly maintenance of up to two hours plus self-service cancellation by logging into the account. We found no public information on a central admin console, a documented API, MDM deployment of clients, admin roles, or a multi-tenant console I could run thirty clients from.
Tailscale
Rollout is genuinely fast: a central console, a REST API on all plans, Jamf deployment documented down to bundle IDs and profile scope, central auto-updates with stable, release candidate and unstable tracks, four administrator roles, GitOps policy, and support tiers with 24/7 coverage named at Gold and Platinum. Terraform support is only documented for privileged access resources, the multiple-tailnet option that would serve a provider's managed multi-tenancy is "contact sales" and framed for OEM, and we found no public information on a self-hosted edition or billing per tenant.
Architecture, reliability & security assurance
NetBird
The trust page states SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 with an official certificate and audit report, a 2025 penetration test report, encryption at rest and in transit with key management, and tested business continuity, disaster recovery and incident response plans. The captured pages give different pictures on source code: the imprint displays an 'OPEN SOURCE 30.7k' badge while the terms state 'The object or source code of the Software will not be disclosed.' We found no public information on the architecture and data flow, control-plane failover, or an availability SLA.
Tailscale
The architecture is published in unusual depth: a coordination server that only exchanges public keys, end-to-end encrypted peer-to-peer traffic the vendor states it cannot read, open-source node and relay code, named ciphers with forward secrecy, SOC 2 Type II, and the network staying reachable when the coordination server is down. Independent Latacora audits exist but only on request rather than published, the vendor states plainly that it has no bounty program, and we found no public information on a status page, an availability SLA or incident post-mortems.
European sovereignty
NetBird
The contracting party is NetBird GmbH of Berlin under German law and jurisdiction, the privacy policy states personal data is processed in the EU/EEA with application hosting on Amazon Web Services EMEA in Luxembourg on EU/EEA servers only, a full subprocessor list with locations and safeguards is published, and the terms state a NetBird data processing agreement applies. Identity runs through Auth0 in the USA under EU Standard Contractual Clauses, and marketing and analytics processors in the USA are likewise listed with safeguards. ISO 27001 and GDPR are stated on the trust page.
Tailscale
This is an American chain: contracting with Tailscale US Inc., a Delaware corporation, exclusive venue for business customers in New York County, and processing locations named as Canada, Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom, and we found no public information on a European hosting option for the control plane and logs. The paperwork is solid for client contracts — a published data processing agreement with standard contractual clauses, EDPO as EU and UK GDPR representative, a subprocessor page with ten days' change notice, return or destruction within thirty days, SOC 2 Type II — but my Hamburg clients will ask where identities and logs sit, and the answer includes the United States.
Pricing transparency
NetBird
The terms publish an indeterminate contract cancellable to the end of the month with 14 days' notice, self-service cancellation in the account, and usage-based pricing, bandwidth limits and fair-use quotas for reverse proxy features. We found no public information on per-user or per-device prices, tier inclusions, minimum seats, VAT treatment or the price of a self-hosted licence.
Tailscale
I can quote most of a client bill straight from the public pages: $0 for the Personal plan free forever, $8 per user per month on Standard, $18 on Premium, 50 tagged resources included with more at $1 per month each, monthly or annual billing set at checkout, taxes excluded, the API on all plans, and network flow logs plus log streaming gated to Premium and Enterprise. Enterprise is custom pricing, extra ephemeral minutes and multiple tailnets are "contact sales", and we found no public information on support-tier prices, minimum seats or minimum term.
