The written short answer is being updated after a re-evaluation. The scores below are current.

Read this comparison as one judge. Each weighs the same scores by what they care about.

The Educator

Teaches thirty people who join from whatever they have, half of them on a phone in a dead spot. Cares that the browser works without an install, that guests need no account, that breakout rooms are usable, and that nobody is excluded by bandwidth or by a missing caption.

This judge's pick

Microsoft Teams

Criterion by criterion

The meeting itself

alfaview

Capacity is published per plan (100/300/500), breakout rooms at fifty per room, simultaneous screen sharing, polling and a whiteboard cover my classroom basics. But the evidence says nothing about mute-all or any host moderation, no waiting room, and not one word on what happens when half my class joins on a phone in a dead spot — the 5 anchor's documented behaviour on constrained connections simply isn't there.

Microsoft Teams

Three hundred participants and thirty-hour meetings are published for every plan, and meetings can carry apps before, during and after — the scale is real for a whole school. But we found no public information on breakout rooms, screen sharing, host moderation or what happens on a weak connection, so it cannot reach the middle band for my classroom.

Encryption & meeting access

alfaview

Encryption is TLS transport and at-rest per BSI guidelines with the vendor running the servers, plus ISO 27001 and two-factor auth for accounts. But no end-to-end option, no key handling statement, and — what I need before strangers meet my learners — no evidence of a lobby, passcode or host-controlled admission at all, so it cannot clear the 5 anchor.

Microsoft Teams

The comparison page states encryption for meetings, chats, calls and files and every plan includes Entra ID for identity, but that is a claim with no mechanism documented behind it. We found no public information on key handling, waiting rooms or per-meeting admission, and no end-to-end option appears in the captures.

Reach & accessibility

alfaview

Browser joining across Edge, Chrome, Firefox and Safari, apps for every platform including Web, and public test rooms enterable without an account or registration keep part of the no-install, no-guest-account promise. But dial-in is only an unpriced add-on with no numbers listed, there is no accessibility statement, no captions mentioned (only a promise not to train models on transcription data), and nothing about low bandwidth — below rubric level 5, above 3.

Microsoft Teams

A global dial-in number as a free add-on, live captions in over thirty languages (English only on Essentials) and translation up to forty-one languages with Premium, plus web and mobile apps — that gets half a class of phones into the room. But we found no public information on joining as a guest without an account, browser parity, keyboard or screen-reader testing, or behaviour on a poor mobile connection.

Recordings, retention & admin control

alfaview

Recording is local-only and the vendor stores nothing from a running session — streams, chat, screen shares — which keeps my learners' data off someone else's disk. But there is no evidence of who may record, whether participants are told, any retention rule, or any admin policy control; the evidence is silent on almost everything this criterion needs, and by the anchors that silence scores near the bottom.

Microsoft Teams

The only governance facts I can stand on are that all data is deleted when a subscription is cancelled and that video calling is managed from an admin center. We found no public information on who may record, whether participants are told, storage region or retention rules, and the privacy statement says data may be used to train AI models — exactly what a works council will ask about.

Integrations & deployment

alfaview

Outlook/M365 integration is included, an API is claimed included, MSI packages exist for managed rollout, and live streaming to your own server is possible. But no SSO/SAML/OIDC anywhere, no SCIM, webhooks or SDK, no Google Calendar, and no self-hosted option — cloud-only with one calendar and an undocumented API is the 3 anchor almost exactly.

Microsoft Teams

The developer pages show a genuine platform: Graph REST APIs with SDKs, bots, change notifications, PowerShell automation and a browser playground, and certified room hardware from Yealink, Crestron, Lenovo, Polycom and AudioCodes is listed. Identity rides on Entra ID in every plan, but we found no public information on SCIM provisioning or a self-hosted and private-cloud option.

European sovereignty

alfaview

German hosting in German datacenters, a German contracting entity (alfaview GmbH, Karlsruhe, HRB 730903 Mannheim), ISO 27001 and a BSI label, with the vendor stating the CLOUD Act does not apply. But the pipeline marks residency, ownership and subprocessor exposure unconfirmed, and no subprocessor list or named infrastructure is published anywhere in the evidence — a solid 5, and I weigh this category heavily enough not to go higher on silence.

Microsoft Teams

I weigh this heavily and it is thin: the privacy statement says personal data may be stored and processed in your region, in the United States and in any jurisdiction where Microsoft or its affiliates and service providers operate facilities, with data shared with Microsoft-controlled affiliates and vendors. The contracting entity is not confirmed on the vendor's own captured pages, we found no public information on subprocessors, and Microsoft Ireland Operations Limited appears only as a contact; the EU-US Data Privacy Framework commitments are the one safeguard stated.

Pricing transparency

alfaview

Three tiers priced publicly (€1 / €3.90 / €9.90 excl. VAT, annual), per-room rather than per-participant licensing, capacity per room stated, billing periods and payment methods given, plus a 30-day trial. It misses the top because dial-in, >500 participants, streaming platform and support are add-ons with no price attached and Enterprise is on request — a buyer still cannot compute the full annual invoice from public pages.

Microsoft Teams

A school office could almost compute the year: Teams Essentials at 3,50 € per user per month on annual billing with prices excluding VAT stated, a 300-participant capacity, thirty-hour meetings, 10 GB or 1 TB of storage per plan, a free dial-in add-on with dial-out to USA/CAN stated as free, and calling minutes itemised per country. It stops short of the top because a prepaid Communications Credits wallet covers pay-per-minute charges without published rates, and we found no public information on webinar capacity or recording storage pricing.
