The short answer

Jimdo and Wix split the six-judge panel by criterion. Wix leads the build side: six judges lean Wix on editor and design (8.8 vs 5.2), SEO and marketing (8.8 vs 6.7) and hosting and portability (6.5 vs 4.0); forms and business draws five Wix leans and one tie (8.3 vs 7.2). Jimdo leads the commercial side: six judges lean Jimdo on pricing transparency (7.2 vs 4.8) and legal compliance (6.0 vs 4.7) — five published plans, Free €0 to Unlimited €50 per month, VAT included, against Wix's discounted subscriptions auto-renewing without notice at the full then-current fee. Sovereignty sits close (3.7 vs 4.2, two lean Wix, four tie): Jimdo's data residency attribute reads "eu only" versus Wix's "us default", and both carry US Cloud Act subprocessor exposure. The four computed weighted totals lean Wix, closest 5.5 vs 5.8 for the data protection officer.

Choose Jimdo if

  • You need published prices before signing: Jimdo lists five plans, Free €0 to Unlimited €50 per month, VAT included, and emails the exact renewal cost six weeks before renewal — pricing transparency leans Jimdo six to zero, 7.2 vs 4.8.
  • You run a German-market business and need generated legal texts: the legal-text generator with Trusted Shops liability draws bench praise, and legal compliance leans Jimdo six to zero, 6.0 vs 4.7.
  • Your compliance review requires EU data residency: Jimdo's data residency attribute reads eu only, while Wix's reads us default.
  • You document payment processors before committing: Stripe is the only processor Jimdo discloses, and it is required for online payments.

Choose Wix if

  • You need pixel-precise drag-and-drop editing with a separate mobile view: editor and design leans Wix six to zero, 8.8 vs 5.2.
  • You are migrating a site and need bulk 301 redirects of up to 500 URLs: SEO and marketing leans Wix six to zero, 8.8 vs 6.7.
  • You take payments, bookings and run a CRM from your forms: forms and business draws five Wix leans with one tie, 8.3 vs 7.2.
  • Hosting and portability weigh into your decision: that criterion leans Wix six to zero, 6.5 vs 4.0.
  • You are a freelance designer or a marketing lead: those judges' weighted totals lean Wix, 7.1 vs 5.7 and 7.3 vs 5.9.

The Small-Business Owner

Runs a joinery with six staff and builds the company website on a Sunday afternoon. Wants a template that looks like a craftsman and not like a start-up, to be found when someone nearby searches for a carpenter, an enquiry form that lands in the inbox, the imprint and cookie banner handled without a lawyer, and a price that is still clear in the second year.

Criterion by criterion

Editor, templates & design control

Jimdo

I could put a joinery site together on a Sunday afternoon: block by block in the browser, over a hundred template variations, an AI that drafts the structure, copy and images, mobile-optimized pages, and a Creator editor with a coding function if I ever need it. We found no public information on separate mobile editing, multilingual pages, roles for my staff or version history, so this reads as a good guided builder rather than fine design control.

Wix

This is the full package: drag and drop on a fluid canvas with pixel-level precision, 900-plus templates, an AI builder for the first draft, a separate mobile editor whose changes leave the desktop version alone, site history you can restore, collaborators by plan, custom code and CMS collections. The only things I could not see documented were design variables and staging before publishing, so it sits just short of the top.

Hosting, domains & portability

Jimdo

Hosting is included with HTTPS on every plan, a free domain for the first contract term, storage stated per plan from 5 GB up to 500 GB, free domain transfer in and two domains per site, and the company states its servers are hosted in Europe. We found no public information on backups, a restore function, an uptime commitment or any export of my pages, text and photos if I move on — that silence is what would worry me at renewal time.

Wix

Hosting is free and included with SSL, a custom domain I can buy from Wix or transfer in, storage stated per plan from 2 GB to unlimited, restore from site history, image compression, and a business email via Google Workspace. The captured pages give different figures for uptime (99.98 and 99.99 percent), data-centre locations are not named, and we found no public information on exporting my pages, content and media when I move on — the terms even tell me to save and back up my own content — so I stop below the deeper tier.

SEO, analytics & visibility

Jimdo

For being found when someone nearby searches for a carpenter, this is genuinely strong: site structure, meta data and schema markup set up automatically, instant indexability, Google Search Console and Analytics included, business listings on Google Business Profile and other directories, plus content structured so AI assistants can read and cite it. The analytics named are Google's, and we found no public information on redirects, robots.txt, noindex control or image alt-text handling.

Wix

For a joinery that wants to be found when someone nearby searches for a carpenter this is close to ideal: editable titles and descriptions, an automatic sitemap, 301 redirects with bulk import, structured data, the Google Business Profile managed straight from the dashboard, server-side rendering, a setup checklist with Semrush keyword research, and even a tool tracking how the site is mentioned in ChatGPT-style engines. Only privacy-friendly first-party analytics and multilingual SEO settings are not documented.

Forms, bookings & business features

Jimdo

The business side is real and works together: AI-drafted Smart Forms whose answers land in one customer database with leads, bookings, orders and payments; appointments with automatic confirmations, reminders and payment at booking; invoices generated automatically from bookings and orders; payment links; and a small shop with Stripe or PayPal checkout. We found no public information on conditional form fields, file uploads, member areas or CRM integrations, and Google Calendar sync is stated as coming soon.

Wix

The enquiry form is covered: conditional rules, multi-page forms, spam filtering and submissions showing up in real time in the dashboard, with payments possible on the form itself once the site is upgraded. Around it sit bookings with Google and iCal sync and video appointments, a members area, events with tickets, invoices, a built-in CRM and an app market — what I did not find documented are file uploads, confirmation emails or consent and retention settings per form.

Imprint, privacy & cookie compliance

Jimdo

For me this is the standout: a legal-text generator that produces GDPR-compliant imprint, privacy policy, AGB and withdrawal texts, places them on the right pages automatically and updates them when the law changes, with Trusted Shops taking over liability — over 500,000 texts issued and none successfully cease-and-desisted. Form responses are described as GDPR-compliant, data is not used to train AI models and the checkout is PCI DSS compliant; we found no public information on a cookie consent banner, a data processing agreement or accessibility.

Wix

The data processing agreement is public, binding and even explained in a German help article, GDPR compliance is claimed with a privacy centre, and a cookie alert is documented — but we found no public information on an imprint generator or legal-text partner, on a banner that blocks scripts until consent is given, or on accessibility features. As an owner who wants the paperwork handled without a lawyer, I would still be buying legal texts elsewhere.

European sovereignty

Jimdo

The company presents itself as Made in Germany with servers hosted in Europe and states that customer data is not used to train AI models — a good start for my visitors' data. Beyond that the picture thins out: Stripe is required for in-product online payments and a US parent sits behind the processor, and we found no public information on named hosting infrastructure, other subprocessors such as email or support, a data processing agreement or security certifications.

Wix

The contracting party is Wix.com Ltd. in Tel Aviv with a US subsidiary, and visitor data is first processed in Israel under an adequacy decision; the subprocessor list is commendably open and names locations, but the chain runs largely through US providers under contractual clauses, with Google Ireland the only EU infrastructure provider shown. Server locations for the sites themselves are not stated, and no ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certification is named.

Pricing transparency

Jimdo

All five plans are public — Free €0, Start €12, Grow €20, Grow Legal €29, Unlimited €50 per month — with a comparison table of pages, storage, events, forms and support times, all prices including VAT, a free domain for the first term that then costs 24 € per year, 1-, 12- or 24-month terms, and a reminder with the exact renewal price six weeks before renewal. Still open: we found no public information on a notice period or setup fee, the plan renews "at the regular price" without a separate figure being stated, and Stripe's transaction fee amounts are not shown (Jimdo itself states it never charges transaction fees).

Wix

The plans page shows the plans with what each includes — storage from 2 GB to unlimited, collaborators, a free domain voucher for one year valid only on brand-new domains — and a free tier and 14-day money-back guarantee exist. But we found no public information on the regular price after the introductory term, domain or mailbox renewals, VAT treatment or notice periods, and the terms reserve the right to change fees at any time and to auto-renew at the full then-current fee without notice — so the price in the second year is not computable from these pages.
