The written short answer is being updated after a re-evaluation. The scores below are current.

Read this comparison as one judge. Each weighs the same scores by what they care about.

The Demand Gen Lead

Owns pipeline contribution and is measured on it. Wants journeys that branch on real behaviour, scoring that sales trusts, and attribution that survives a quarterly review. Unmoved by a builder that demos beautifully and cannot say which journey sent yesterday's email.

Criterion by criterion

Journeys & orchestration

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

The builder branches on contact actions and behaviours, goals are tracked with drop-off visibility and fallback follow-ups, and entries fire from real events — site and app actions, deal-stage changes, form tools and segment moves. What the captured pages give me nothing on is collision handling: I found no public information on frequency capping, suppression across journeys, priority when a contact qualifies for several, or versioning of a live journey, and that is the part that decides whether a programme survives a quarter.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

The evidence proves workflows at volume (300 at Professional, 1,000 at Enterprise) driven by behavioural events with unlimited actions at Pro+, plus code-free custom events — beyond bare autoresponders. But nothing on branching, waits, per-contact journey state, and worst for me, silence on what happens when journeys collide: no frequency capping, suppression, priority or versioning anywhere.

Lead scoring, routing & lifecycle

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

Scoring is genuinely built out: separate models per line of business, points deducted as well as awarded, category- and product-level scores, real-time scoring from visits and clicks, automated routing to reps and deal creation once a contact's score reaches a defined point, with scores syncing to the CRM in real time. I found no public information on account-level scoring, follow-up SLAs or per-contact score history — without the history behind the number, sales trusts it less.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

One mention of 'automatisches Leadscoring' bundled with workflows — that is the entire scoring story: no lifecycle stages, no decay, no routing, no negative or account-level scoring, no score history, nothing explainable to sales. The vendor's own enrichment from a commercial dataset makes scores even harder to account for, and multi-touch attribution's 10,000 logged interactions is interaction logging, not score transparency.

Channels & personalisation

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

Email, SMS, WhatsApp, site messages, forms and landing pages run off one platform, with retargeting and prospecting audiences to Google, Facebook and LinkedIn, and personalisation driven by behaviour rather than stored fields alone. Push arrives only via integration, and I found no public information on cross-channel frequency capping or next-best-channel selection — the collision problem again.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

Email is evidenced with tiered send limits, 'Omni-Channel-Marketingautomatisierung' is asserted by label at Pro+, and web presence shows up via custom events and consent banners — but no channel is actually enumerated: no SMS, no push, no ad audiences, no dynamic content, no shared suppression. A marketing label is not a channel list; I can't plan a cross-channel programme on it.

Consent, tracking & profiling

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

The product profiles named people — site tracking is recommended to everyone and anonymous visits are attached to contacts on form fill — while the consent side shows double opt-in at form level with the opt-in IP and subscribe date recorded, consent-ready forms and SMS opt-in management. But site tracking switches at account level rather than per contact, the privacy policy covers only ActiveCampaign's own processing of individuals, and I found no public information on retention of client contact data, erasure handling for derived scores, or a cookieless tracking mode.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

Rights handling is documented (access, deletion, objection, restriction, withdrawal) with delete-or-anonymize retention, consent banners support GPC, and there is an opt-out form for the commercial enrichment dataset. But the anchor-5 essentials are missing: no per-contact tracking switch, no per-channel consent states, no stored consent record with source, no fixed retention — and HubSpot is controller of tracking-code visitor data, which means the vendor itself profiles your visitors.

CRM integration & data model

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

The contact sync endpoint is documented in unusual depth — a defined lookup order across id, WhatsApp id, email and phone, upsert semantics, per-action permissions, and a source tag so integrations skip their own writes — and account and contact objects are both modelled. The hard part is what I cannot see: field-level conflict rules, a sync error log, replay of failed syncs and API rate limits are all absent from the captured pages, and the Salesforce sync direction is not stated; anonymous visitor identification hints at anonymous-to-known resolution but the identity model is not laid out.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

The only data-integration evidence is 'über 2.000' marketplace apps — breadth with no mechanics: no bidirectional CRM sync, no field mapping, no conflict rules, no sync error log, no identity resolution. The evidence never even says this sits on HubSpot's own CRM, so as far as I'm allowed to know, the join that decides the implementation is undocumented.

European sovereignty

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

The contracting entity is ActiveCampaign, LLC in Chicago, the API lives on a US-named domain, and the stated basis for moving EU data is the Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses — a transfer argument, not a residency answer. Nylas, a US-headquartered provider, is named for the optional email connection, and I found no public information on EU hosting for client data or a published subprocessor list. For behavioural profiles of named EU residents I weigh that heavily.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

Provenance is HubSpot, Inc., Cambridge, Massachusetts; data residency is unstated, and the subprocessor list lives in a DPA annex with US affiliates as subprocessors — that is a non-EU vendor with behavioural profiles of EU residents and no evidenced safeguard. A Berlin support line and an Annex-3 pointer don't change who processes or where; for a platform that is itself controller of tracked visitors, that's disqualifying in my book.

Pricing transparency

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

All four tiers carry public prices with billing period, send limits stated as multiples of the contact count, user counts and unusually clear feature boundaries — automation exists from the entry tier with a five-action cap — and onboarding and migration are free on every plan. But the contact count those "starts at" prices actually cover is not stated, the SMS, WhatsApp, CRM and AI add-ons carry no prices, and I found no public information on overage rates or VAT treatment, so the real annual invoice is not computable from public pages alone.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

Credit where due: the tier where real automation begins is explicit (Starter caps at 10 actions, unlimited plus omni-channel from Professional; 300 vs 1,000 workflows), and limits are unusually detailed — send volumes, campaigns, events, dashboards. But no currency prices, no billing period, no overage rates, no onboarding fee, no VAT treatment appear, and the agent credit system (50 credits per resolved conversation, 10 per smart property) adds a metered cost I cannot compute from this sheet.
