The written short answer is being updated after a re-evaluation. The scores below are current.

Read this comparison as one judge. Each weighs the same scores by what they care about.

The Skeptic

Reads for the contact-tier staircase, the tier where journeys actually begin, and the mandatory onboarding fee that never appears on the pricing page. Has watched "unlimited emails" mean unlimited within a sending limit described elsewhere.

Criterion by criterion

Journeys & orchestration

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

A drag-and-drop builder with split and branching paths, goals that show who is moving through a funnel and where people drop off, and entry points from site and app events, deal-stage changes, contact-field states, segment entry and score milestones. What I cannot find is anything about journeys colliding — frequency capping, suppression across journeys, priority when a contact qualifies for several, versioning of a live journey — nor any stated wait steps.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

The staircase is at least honest: Starter caps at 10 automated actions, 'unlimited' starts at Professional, and 'unlimited' workflows turn out to be 300 there and 1,000 at Enterprise, with behavioural-event triggers. But nothing evidences branching, waits, goals, per-contact journey state, or what happens when two workflows want the same person — every collision question is unanswered, so this never reaches the visual-builder anchor.

Lead scoring, routing & lifecycle

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

Points-based scoring you can add to and deduct from, separate models per business line, category- and product-specific scores, real-time updates, and automated routing of high scorers to a rep with a CRM deal created when a score milestone is reached. But the pages are silent on score decay, lifecycle stages, per-contact score history and account-level scoring — and the AI win-probability and lead-quality scores ship with nothing a customer could use to explain a decision.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

Automatic lead scoring fed by behavioural events is confirmed, but only as a clause inside the Enterprise workflow limit — scoring begins where the invoice is largest. No lifecycle stages, no routing, no decay, no score history, no explainability: the handover half of the criterion is entirely unevidenced.

Channels & personalisation

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

Email plus SMS and WhatsApp add-ons, site messages, forms, landing pages, web personalisation and ad audiences on Google, Facebook and LinkedIn, all feeding one contact profile that combines lead scores with site and event tracking. Push exists only via integration, and I found no public information on cross-channel frequency capping, a shared suppression list across channels, or next-best-channel selection.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

Email is documented down to the send (2,000 free with branding; 5x/10x/20x the contact tier) and on-site behaviour is covered via the tracking code and 500 custom event definitions. But 'Omni-Channel-Marketingautomatisierung' is a label, not a channel list: no SMS, no push, no ad-audience sync, and no evidence of one profile or one suppression list shared across channels.

Consent, tracking & profiling

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

Double opt-in is available per form with a subscribe date and the IPv4 address of the opt-in recorded, and the SMS add-on carries opt-in management tools. Against that, site tracking switches on and off at account level with a domain whitelist, and I found no public information on suppressing tracking or profiling per person, on retention of customer contact records — the published privacy policy states it does not apply where the vendor processes as a data processor — on versioned consent wording, or on a cookieless mode, while the vendor's own pages describe session replay and categories of identifiers sold to enrichment providers.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

Consent banners with GPC support and geotargeting are real capture tooling, and access/deletion/objection rights plus a stated retention policy are documented — though retention has no fixed period and no per-category rules. Missing: per-contact profiling suppression, per-channel consent states, stored consent records with source, and any Art. 22-grade documentation — and note the vendor itself profiles people through a commercial enrichment dataset, with an opt-out form as the only brake.

CRM integration & data model

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

The API documents a contact upsert with a defined lookup order across id, WhatsApp id, email and phone, plus form attribution, permissions, and account-contact endpoints; anonymous site visits associate to a contact on form registration; and Salesforce field sync, Dynamics and deep ecommerce data are named. But the CRM sync is never stated as bidirectional, and I found no public information on field-level conflict rules, a sync error log, replay of failed syncs or documented API rate limits.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

A 2,000-app marketplace and 500 custom event definitions evidence connectivity and an extensible event model, but the evidence never names a CRM sync, field mapping, dedup rules, conflict resolution, or a documented API with rate limits. The join that decides the implementation is entirely unevidenced.

European sovereignty

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

The contracting entity is ActiveCampaign, LLC of Chicago, we found no public information on EU hosting of customer data or on a published subprocessor list, the API host sits at api-us1.com, and a US-headquartered provider (Nylas) backs an optional email feature. The safeguards named are Data Privacy Framework self-certification, SCCs, a JAMS dispute route and a UK representative — a transfer regime to argue under, not a sovereign chain.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

The contracting entity is HubSpot, Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and every sovereignty attribute — jurisdiction, residency, subprocessor exposure — is unknown; the only EU signals are a German sales line and a.de domain, which is window dressing. Affiliates process as subprocessors under a DPA annex the evidence never shows, and behavioural profiles of EU residents leave with no stated EU basis or safeguard.

Pricing transparency

ActiveCampaign (Automation)

Four plans are priced publicly at $15, $49, $79 and $145 per month billed annually, with send limits stated as multiples of the contact limit, user counts per tier, and onboarding and migration published as free on every plan. But each price only starts at a figure without the contact count it covers, SMS, WhatsApp, transactional email and AI sit as unpriced add-ons, automation is capped at five actions per automation on the cheapest plan where unlimited begins one tier up, and I found no public information on overage rates, VAT treatment or the minimum term.

HubSpot Marketing Hub

The staircase itself is unusually readable — automation actions per tier, 300 vs 1,000 workflows, and journeys visibly begin at Professional — which beats the usual hidden-tier trick. But no euro figure for any tier appears in the evidence, the 'x the contact tier' send multiples are unusable without a published contact-tier price, the AI credit meter (10 credits per smart property, 50 per resolved conversation) adds a second invoice with no published rate, and the mandatory onboarding fee I look for is absent as always.
