The written short answer is being updated after a re-evaluation. The scores below are current.

Read this comparison as one judge. Each weighs the same scores by what they care about.

The Product Engineer

Ships experiments behind feature flags and would rather not ship a third-party script at all. Wants server-side SDKs for the stack in use, edge delivery, metrics computed in the warehouse the team already trusts, and an API good enough to build internal tooling on.

Criterion by criterion

Experiment types & delivery

Kameleoon

Server-side testing, mobile app testing and multivariate tests sit next to feature flags with progressive rollout, mutually exclusive groups and holdouts, and variations built through graphic or code editors or SDKs — the shape I want to ship experiments behind. It stops short of the top tier: we found no public information on edge or CDN delivery, and no evidence that personalisation can itself be tested against a control.

Optimizely

The plans page lists A/B, multi-page, feature and server-side testing, a proprietary stats engine and real-time personalisation — but that is a feature grid, and the captured documentation gives me no SDK, no delivery detail and no server-side implementation to read. I score what I can verify, and here the grid claims more than the documentation shows.

Statistical method & guardrails

Kameleoon

Sequential testing, multiple testing correction, automatic sample ratio mismatch detection and CUPED are all named on public pages, which covers most of the guardrails I look for. CUPED appears as a Starter add-on rather than standard, and we found no public information on guardrail metrics that could stop a harmful test, on the statistical method by name, or on a sample-size calculator.

Optimizely

The only statistical statement anywhere is the plans page's "Proprietary Stats Engine for results you can trust"; we found no public information naming the method, sample-size or duration guidance, handling of peeking or multiple comparisons, or sample ratio mismatch detection. An engine I cannot see into deciding my winners is a claim, not a method.

Consent & visitor tracking

Kameleoon

The privacy policy lists cookies for the vendor's own website and a Data Privacy & Security module is named, but we found no public information on what the customer's test script stores on a visitor's device or when it runs relative to consent. The homepage advertises bypassing Safari ITP and ad blockers for full traffic visibility, which points away from a consent-pending design.

Optimizely

The consent documentation is guidance for the customer on GDPR consent — affirmative action, per-purpose consent, storing consent in a user profile — rather than a statement of what the testing script stores or does before consent is given. We found no public information on cookies or storage keys set by the script, a consent-pending or cookieless mode, or consent management platform integration; the privacy notice's hashed user ID shared with social networks is the only word on visitor identifiers.

Snippet performance & flicker

Kameleoon

One figure is public — a snippet that loads under 70 ms — plus a server-side module as the flicker-free path, and that is about all. We found no public information on script size, anti-flicker handling, asynchronous loading, impact on Core Web Vitals, or a self-hosting option.

Optimizely

We found no public information on the snippet's weight, loading behaviour, flicker handling or Core Web Vitals impact — the captured pages say nothing measurable about the client-side script's cost to the page. For a script that runs on every visitor, that leaves me nothing to assess.

Analytics, data export & integrations

Kameleoon

This is where the platform earns its keep with me: BigQuery metrics can be displayed as KPIs on results pages, goals can pull conversion data from BigQuery on a scheduled basis, two-way warehouse sync and CDP integrations are advertised, and a documented API with Bearer authentication and pagination exports segments. The catches are that the warehouse integration comes as a premium add-on priced only via the customer success manager, and we found no public information on visitor-level raw data export or API rate limits.

Optimizely

The strongest evidence in the set: documented warehouse connections to BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks and Redshift with real setup detail — service accounts, custom roles, JSON keys — and warehouse-native analysis claimed on the plans page. But the documented flow is the customer's warehouse feeding Optimizely Analytics, and we found no public information on an API or on exporting visitor-level experiment results, which is what I need to re-check a winner in my own data.

European sovereignty

Kameleoon

The chain that is documented is European: a French contracting entity under French law, personal data stored on EU servers, and Hetzner in Gunzenhausen, Germany named as host. It stops there — we found no public information on a published subprocessor list, a data processing agreement covering the visitor data the script collects, or where the snippet itself is delivered from.

Optimizely

The contracting vendor is Optimizely North America Inc., with EU entities (Optimizely AB and a Berlin GmbH) in the group, the captured pages do not state hosting, and the privacy notice names only categories of recipients — payments, hosting, analytics, storage — rather than a subprocessor list. Transfers to the US rest on the Data Privacy Framework rather than EU processing of visitor data, so this sits at residency-as-an-arrangement with the subprocessor picture unpublished.

Pricing transparency

Kameleoon

A free trial is public — 30 days, three experiments, no credit card required — but beyond it the plans read Custom with unlimited experiments and unlimited tested traffic, and add-ons from personalisation to CUPED to the data warehouse are unpriced. No traffic metric, no limits, no overage: the annual invoice is not computable from public pages, and the data warehouse add-on explicitly routes pricing to the customer success manager.

Optimizely

The plans page is explicit: "Every Optimizely plan is individually packaged. Tell us a bit about your digital needs, and we'll create a plan together." The terms do publish mechanics — overage fees at two times the usage unit price invoiced monthly in arrears, twelve-month auto-renewal, ninety-day non-renewal notice — but with no public tier prices or usage volume pricing, the invoice remains a sales conversation.
