The written short answer is being updated after a re-evaluation. The scores below are current.

Read this comparison as one judge. Each weighs the same scores by what they care about.

The Founder

Runs a twelve-person company and does the books on a Sunday. Wants bank feeds that match themselves, invoices out in a minute, and the VAT return submitted without learning ELSTER. Will pay for the hour saved, and notices when the headline price was not the invoice.

QuickBooks

This judge's pick

Criterion by criterion

Bookkeeping core

QuickBooks

The ledger underneath the screens is the first thing I check, and I found no public information on double-entry, a chart of accounts, journals, opening balances, or a period close — the only captured material is a privacy statement. A bookkeeping core this unevidenced lands at the bottom of the scale.

Xero

The evidence evidences invoicing, bill entry and reconciliation, but not one word about a double-entry ledger, SKR03/SKR04, journals, opening balances or a period close — for German books that's the entire engine missing. I'd be buying an invoicing app with an invisible ledger underneath.

GoBD, immutability & audit

QuickBooks

Whether my postings would survive a Betriebsprüfung is unaddressed: I found no public information on a GoBD claim, an audit trail, unalterable postings, or accounting-record retention, and the one retention statement concerns personal information kept as long as business needs require. Nothing on a Verfahrensdokumentation either.

Xero

Across the homepage, pricing and privacy pages there is no GoBD claim, no statement that postings become unalterable, no retention period, no Verfahrensdokumentation. If the Betriebsprüfer knocks, I have nothing to hand over — that is the definition of the zero anchor.

Tax handling & filings

QuickBooks

I pay for the hour saved on VAT, and I found no public information on VAT logic, UStVA, ELSTER submission, EÜR, or reverse-charge handling. The only tax statement captured is that US tax return information is processed and stored in the United States.

Xero

Nothing on VAT rates, UStVA, ELSTER, EÜR or reverse-charge anywhere in the evidence — the Sunday afternoon I want back would still end at the tax office by hand. For a German filing year this is a zero, not a weak spot.

Receipts, banking & matching

QuickBooks

Sunday bookkeeping lives or dies on bank feeds that match themselves, and I found no public information on bank connections, receipt capture, OCR, matching rules, or e-invoice handling in the captured pages. How evidence and money reach the ledger is entirely unevidenced.

Xero

Auto-reconcile, bulk reconcile and Smart Document Capture suggest the money side is partly automated, which is exactly what I want on a Sunday. But there is no evidence of German bank feeds, actual OCR, matching rules, ZUGFeRD/XRechnung, or ersetzendes Scannen — promising screens, unproven evidence chain.

Tax adviser handoff

QuickBooks

My Steuerberater asks for DATEV by name; I found no public information on a DATEV export, any other accounting export, or an adviser login in the captured pages. The year-end handoff is a blank from the buyer's side.

Xero

A quarter-million accountants and bookkeepers use Xero, so my Steuerberater might get a login — but the evidence shows no DATEV export, no postings export, no German year-end handoff at all. The handover would be PDFs and screenshots, which is exactly what I refuse to pay for.

European sovereignty

QuickBooks

The contracting entity is Intuit Inc. of Mountain View and I found no public information on an EU hosting option — US tax return information is even stated to be processed and stored in the United States, while credit bureaus and session-replay providers appear in passing as US services. Transfers rest on standard contractual clauses and the Data Privacy Framework rather than EU storage, and I found no public information on an export that would keep my German retention obligation alive if I left.

Xero

New Zealand group entity, hosting stated only as 'Global (USD)', subprocessors unnamed, with my ten-year German retention obligation hanging over all of it; a SOC 2 report on request is an American control audit, not European hosting. The books would live where I cannot compel them to be produced.

Pricing transparency

QuickBooks

I notice when the headline price was not the invoice, but here I found no public price at all: no tiers, no limits, no add-ons, no billing period. From the captured pages, every figure would have to come out of a sales conversation.

Xero

Tier prices with promo periods, invoice and bill limits, two priced add-ons, one-month cancellation and a free trial are all public — more honest than most. But VAT treatment, extra users and any adviser seat are unstated, and 'Global (USD)' means my euro invoice still wobbles with the exchange rate.
