The short answer

Wix leads each of the seven criteria — editor and design 8.8 to 6.7, SEO and marketing 8.8 to 5.7, forms and business 8.3 to 4.0, hosting and portability 6.5 to 3.2, legal compliance 4.7 to 3.3, sovereignty 4.2 to 0.7, pricing transparency 4.8 to 3.0 — and on each criterion 0 judges lean Webflow, 6 lean Wix, 0 tie. The verdicts narrate one buyer split inside Webflow's SEO scoring: five of six judges scored 6 for documented answer-engine analytics; the small-business owner scored 4, finding no help for sitemaps, redirects or local search. Weighted totals, shown for four of six judges, run 3.5–4.5 for Webflow against 5.8–7.3 for Wix. Sovereignty attributes: Webflow lists legal entity jurisdiction, ownership, data residency and subprocessor exposure as unknown; Wix lists jurisdiction IL, data residency US by default, subprocessor exposure US CLOUD Act reach. Webflow's only price statement is "Start for free".

Choose Webflow if

  • You publish in multiple languages and need CMS localisation with independent per-locale publishing and locale subdirectories — cited by judges in Webflow's editor and design scoring, its highest criterion at a 6.7 mean
  • You track how AI assistants cite your site — five of six judges scored Webflow 6 on SEO and marketing for documented answer-engine analytics covering visibility scores, citation rates and bot traffic across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity
  • Your team builds with code-component libraries installed via the command line, GSAP animations, a cloneable gallery, and an AI agent that customises components, styles, CMS content and pages — each cited in the editor and design verdict
  • You want a free starting point before paying — Webflow's only published price statement is 'Start for free'

Choose Wix if

  • You need pixel-precise drag-and-drop editing with a separate mobile view — editor and design leans 6 to 0 for Wix, means 8.8 to 6.7

  • You weigh hosting and portability heavily — leans 6 to 0 for Wix with means of 6.5 to 3.2; Webflow's verdict documents a webflow.io subdomain plus allowed domains, with exports limited to analytics data

The Small-Business Owner

Runs a joinery with six staff and builds the company website on a Sunday afternoon. Wants a template that looks like a craftsman and not like a start-up, to be found when someone nearby searches for a carpenter, an enquiry form that lands in the inbox, the imprint and cookie banner handled without a lawyer, and a price that is still clear in the second year.

Criterion by criterion

Editor, templates & design control

Webflow

There is a gallery of community-built sites I could clone and then restyle, with components, styles, CMS content and pages all changeable and AI assistance documented. Multilingual is genuinely worked out, with independent publishing per locale and locale subdirectories. Nothing on the captured pages describes mobile or breakpoint editing, user roles for collaborators, or a version history to restore.

Wix

This is the full package: drag and drop on a fluid canvas with pixel-level precision, 900-plus templates, an AI builder for the first draft, a separate mobile editor whose changes leave the desktop version alone, site history you can restore, collaborators by plan, custom code and CMS collections. The only things I could not see documented were design variables and staging before publishing, so it sits just short of the top.

Hosting, domains & portability

Webflow

Sites run on a webflow.io subdomain plus my own allowed domains, and there is a free way to start. Nightly exports are described, but they carry analytics data to warehouses like Snowflake or BigQuery — I found no public information on SSL, backups, storage limits, or an export of the site's own pages, content and media.

Wix

Hosting is free and included with SSL, a custom domain I can buy from Wix or transfer in, storage stated per plan from 2 GB to unlimited, restore from site history, image compression, and a business email via Google Workspace. The captured pages give different figures for uptime (99.98 and 99.99 percent), data-centre locations are not named, and we found no public information on exporting my pages, content and media when I move on — the terms even tell me to save and back up my own content — so I stop below the deeper tier.

SEO, analytics & visibility

Webflow

The analytics side is documented in real depth: page views and element clicks in Analyze, and a whole answer-engine API showing how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity mention and cite my business. What a local carpenter actually needs is thinner — the pages give no sitemap, redirects or local-search help, and only hint that SEO metadata can be localized per language.

Wix

For a joinery that wants to be found when someone nearby searches for a carpenter this is close to ideal: editable titles and descriptions, an automatic sitemap, 301 redirects with bulk import, structured data, the Google Business Profile managed straight from the dashboard, server-side rendering, a setup checklist with Semrush keyword research, and even a tool tracking how the site is mentioned in ChatGPT-style engines. Only privacy-friendly first-party analytics and multilingual SEO settings are not documented.

Forms, bookings & business features

Webflow

Form submissions are clearly stored and manageable: listable, filterable, paginated, updatable and deletable through a documented API, and a marketplace of third-party apps exists, shown for consent tools. I found no public information on spam protection, email notifications into my inbox, bookings, payments or CRM connections.

Wix

The enquiry form is covered: conditional rules, multi-page forms, spam filtering and submissions showing up in real time in the dashboard, with payments possible on the form itself once the site is upgraded. Around it sit bookings with Google and iCal sync and video appointments, a members area, events with tickets, invoices, a built-in CRM and an app market — what I did not find documented are file uploads, confirmation emails or consent and retention settings per form.

Imprint, privacy & cookie compliance

Webflow

The consent tooling that is documented covers only Webflow's own Analyze and Optimize tracking — for everything else I am told to set up my own banner or bring a third-party platform like OneTrust, TrustArc, DataGrail or Finsweet. The vendor's own example consent modal is flagged as possibly not complying with all privacy laws, with GDPR and CCPA responsibility placed on me. I found no public information on imprint or privacy-policy help, a data processing agreement, or accessibility tooling beyond a gallery of accessibility-themed community sites.

Wix

The data processing agreement is public, binding and even explained in a German help article, GDPR compliance is claimed with a privacy centre, and a cookie alert is documented — but we found no public information on an imprint generator or legal-text partner, on a banner that blocks scripts until consent is given, or on accessibility features. As an owner who wants the paperwork handled without a lawyer, I would still be buying legal texts elsewhere.

European sovereignty

Webflow

The provider is named as Webflow, Inc., a Delaware corporation in San Francisco, so the contracting side sits outside the EU. I found no public information on where sites, form entries or visitor data are hosted, on the subprocessors in the chain, or on a data processing agreement, and the consent documentation leaves GDPR compliance to me as the site owner.

Wix

The contracting party is Wix.com Ltd. in Tel Aviv with a US subsidiary, and visitor data is first processed in Israel under an adequacy decision; the subprocessor list is commendably open and names locations, but the chain runs largely through US providers under contractual clauses, with Google Ireland the only EU infrastructure provider shown. Server locations for the sites themselves are not stated, and no ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certification is named.

Pricing transparency

Webflow

A free start is shown, and the pages reveal the product is priced in pieces — site plans, an eligible Enterprise plan, and Analyze or Optimize add-ons. I found no public information on the figures themselves: monthly prices, renewals, minimum terms or add-on costs, so I could not begin to compute my second-year cost.

Wix

The plans page shows the plans with what each includes — storage from 2 GB to unlimited, collaborators, a free domain voucher for one year valid only on brand-new domains — and a free tier and 14-day money-back guarantee exist. But we found no public information on the regular price after the introductory term, domain or mailbox renewals, VAT treatment or notice periods, and the terms reserve the right to change fees at any time and to auto-renew at the full then-current fee without notice — so the price in the second year is not computable from these pages.
