The short answer

Miro holds the higher mean in six of the seven criteria; Mural leads none. Design and prototyping (4.8 to 3.0) and sovereignty (5.0 to 2.7) each lean Miro six judges to none. Collaboration and handoff (6.2 to 5.0), pricing transparency (6.5 to 5.3) and brand asset governance (4.8 to 3.2) each lean Miro five to none with one tie. File ownership and portability (4.7 to 3.8) leans Miro three to none with three ties. The split is AI and content rights: means tie at 6.2, one judge each way, four ties — Mural's addendum excludes customer content from training and lets admins switch AI off, while Miro's AI terms are read as unusually explicit. Miro's card lists a US entity, EU residency optional, US CLOUD Act exposure; Mural's attributes read unknown. Five per-judge totals favor Miro, narrowest 5.1 to 4.9. We declare no winner; the splits are the finding.

Choose Miro if

  • You need EU data residency selectable on your plan — Miro's sovereignty card lists EU residency as optional and included on every plan; Mural's card lists data residency as unknown, and its verdict places residency only in an Enterprise feature with no region named.
  • You want seat prices published before you buy — pricing transparency leans Miro five judges to none (6.5 vs 5.3), and Mural's spread there reflects unpublished seat pricing.
  • Your workflow includes developer handoff — collaboration and handoff leans Miro five judges to none (6.2 vs 5.0); Miro documents a copy-to-Figma export route and a Marketplace app for table export, while Mural's spread reflects undocumented developer handoff.
  • You need a written exit path — Miro's terms state customer IP retention plus a 30-day export window after the subscription ends, which the skeptic credited; file ownership and portability leans Miro three judges to none with three ties (4.7 vs 3.8).
  • Design and prototyping capability decides your purchase — six judges lean Miro (4.8 vs 3.0); note the bench found no public information on shared component libraries, tokens, variants or auto layout for Miro.

Choose Mural if

  • Your deciding criterion is AI and content rights — the means tie at 6.2 with one judge leaning each way and four ties, and Mural's AI addendum excludes customer content from model training.
  • Your security team requires an admin switch for AI — Mural's addendum lets admins switch AI off.
  • You need contractual rights to your AI inputs and outputs — Mural's addendum gives customers rights to inputs and outputs.
  • Procurement requires stated certifications — GDPR compliance, SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 are stated for Mural, and a data processing addendum is incorporated by reference.
  • Your team's core work is workshop facilitation — the bench reads Mural as a facilitation canvas, with sticky notes, drawing, templates, mapping and workshop controls documented.

Read this comparison as one judge. Each weighs the same scores by what they care about.

The Agency Owner

Runs a design agency of fifteen and hands every project over to the client at the end. Wants files that export with layers and components intact, guests who are not billed as editors, and terms that say the client owns the work — and what happens to it after a cancellation.

Criterion by criterion

Design, prototyping & design systems

Miro

The captured pages document a collaborative canvas with drag-and-drop editing, clickable prototypes shared for stakeholder comment, screens and flows generated from screenshots and PRDs, AI-generated prototypes that stay fully editable, and a set of 29 prototype templates. One-click automatic styling to the brand's colours and fonts gives shared styling across boards, but we found no public information on team component libraries that update where they are used, tokens or variables with themes, or component variants — the machinery that keeps a client's product consistent after my team leaves.

Mural

The pricing page documents a whiteboard canvas of sticky notes, drawing, images, icons and diagramming with a template library, and the prototyping items are workshop templates — one built with Voltage Control — rather than interactive prototypes linking screens. We found no public information on reusable components, shared styles or design tokens. As a place to make client design work this is a facilitation surface, not a production design tool.

Collaboration, review & developer handoff

Miro

Real-time co-editing, comments and @mentions pinned to the design, prototype links stakeholders can comment on, and REST APIs, WebSDKs and 250+ integrations including Jira, Confluence and Claude Code are all documented, with a copy-to-Figma handoff that keeps prototype elements fully editable. What I could not find public information on is a developer inspect view with measurements and asset export, version history with restore, or confirmation that guests and clients can comment without a paid seat — the first thing I check before inviting a client into a workspace.

Mural

Real-time collaboration is real: comments attach to objects, move with them, resolve into a sidebar and notify via email or Slack, and external access is handled well — visitors are included in every plan, Business promises unlimited external users, and visitor links expire on a clock you set. The developer handoff side is undocumented, though: we found no public information on an inspect view with measurements, version history with restore, or branching. Guests who comment without costing me an editor seat is exactly what I want to see, but engineering gets nothing documented beyond an API and SDK definition in the terms.

Brand assets & governance

Miro

Brand Center is documented as the place to manage company fonts, colours, styles and templates, custom templates carry the brand's visual guidelines onto every new board, and one-click automatic styling restyles boards and presentations to brand colours and fonts, with a brand guidelines template for documenting the rules. We found no public information on locking brand elements, restricting who may edit templates, or rights, usage and expiry metadata on licensed assets.

Mural

What is documented is a shared template and content library, a facilitator lock that controls who can unlock objects on a board, and Mural's own wordmark, symbol and colour downloads for press use. We found no public information on a customer brand kit, guidelines, tagging, approval workflows, or licence and expiry metadata on assets. Locking workshop content is not the same as governing a client's brand.

Files, formats & portability

Miro

The terms say the customer retains all intellectual property rights in customer content and may export it during the subscription term or within 30 days after it ends, with permanent deletion if the account is deleted — the post-cancellation clarity I look for — though the export formats themselves are only described as being in the documentation and are not shown on the captured pages. A copy-to-Figma workflow with fully editable prototype elements and an MCP push to a coding agent are documented; we found no public information on an open or documented file format, bulk export of a team's boards, or transferring the files of removed users to the organisation.

Mural

Exports run to PDF, PNG, a PowerPoint outline, zipped HTML and data files, and CSV for sticky notes — one mural at a time, members only, with download links that expire after five days. The help centre states there is no way to move a mural into another program in editable form, with copy-paste offered as a workaround. The terms say a cancelled account keeps access to the end of its term and content may then be deleted under standard retention policies with no timeline stated, so a final handover has to happen before that date.

AI features & rights to the work

Miro

The AI terms are unusually explicit: customers retain ownership of Input and Output, and administrators get granular control over which AI features are available, organisation-wide moderation filters, prompt blocking and the ability to switch Miro AI or MCP off entirely, with an audit trail of AI interactions and even the option to run Miro AI on your own model subscription with your own API key. Rather than excluding training, the terms grant a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use Input and Output for improving the AI features, with withdrawable consent required on Enterprise and reasonable means to object on other plans, and the terms expressly place IP infringement claims over AI output outside the indemnification — a gap I would flag to any client before shipping generated campaign visuals.

Mural

The AI Addendum states customer content is not used to train, improve or develop machine-learning models and the customer retains all rights, title and interest in inputs and outputs, and admins can switch AI features off at company or workspace level — though the captured pages give different figures for the Enterprise default, one showing it on by default and the other off. The same addendum permits anonymised, de-identified AI inputs to be collected to improve the AI features. We found no public information naming the AI providers or their processing locations, or on any IP indemnity for generated output.

European sovereignty

Miro

EU data residency is listed as included on every plan and selectable alongside the US, Australia and Japan, an Amsterdam entity (RealtimeBoard BV) is named as the EU representative, and the terms bind both parties to a DPA. The contracting party is the San Francisco company under California law, the privacy policy notes AI features may share limited data with Microsoft, and we found no published list of subprocessors with locations — EU storage on the table, chain largely unstated.

Mural

A data processing addendum is incorporated into the terms, GDPR compliance is claimed alongside SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001, and data residency appears as an Enterprise feature with no region named. The contract runs under California law with exclusive venue in San Jose and the contracting company is a US business. We found no public information on hosting locations or the subprocessor chain.

Pricing transparency

Miro

The pricing page publishes Free at €0, Starter at €8/month per member, billed yearly, and Business at €20/month per member, billed yearly, with Enterprise at custom pricing from 30 members, and a comparison table naming where SSO, audit logs, video calls, AI credits of 25 and 50 per member per month, and MCP call limits land on each plan; the terms add auto-renewal for successive 12-month periods with 90 days' notice of non-renewal, payment within 30 days, and non-refundable fees. We found no public information on how viewers or guests are billed, how and when added seats are trued up, or VAT treatment — the pieces a buyer needs to compute a full annual cost for a mixed team of editors and reviewers.

Mural

The pricing page publishes $0 USD for unlimited members on the Free plan and $17.99 USD per member / month billed annually on Business with feature lists per plan, unlimited external users on Business and visitors in every plan, while Enterprise is contact for pricing. The terms state fees exclude VAT and other taxes, that prepaid fees are non-refundable, that cancellation keeps access to the end of the term, and that downgrades take effect at renewal. We found no public information on how and when added seats are billed, on AI credit pricing, or on what the tiered Limited and Full Member seats cost.
