The short answer

Miro holds the higher mean in six of the seven criteria; Mural leads none. Design and prototyping (4.8 to 3.0) and sovereignty (5.0 to 2.7) each lean Miro six judges to none. Collaboration and handoff (6.2 to 5.0), pricing transparency (6.5 to 5.3) and brand asset governance (4.8 to 3.2) each lean Miro five to none with one tie. File ownership and portability (4.7 to 3.8) leans Miro three to none with three ties. The split is AI and content rights: means tie at 6.2, one judge each way, four ties — Mural's addendum excludes customer content from training and lets admins switch AI off, while Miro's AI terms are read as unusually explicit. Miro's card lists a US entity, EU residency optional, US CLOUD Act exposure; Mural's attributes read unknown. Five per-judge totals favor Miro, narrowest 5.1 to 4.9. We declare no winner; the splits are the finding.

Choose Miro if

  • You need EU data residency selectable on your plan — Miro's sovereignty card lists EU residency as optional and included on every plan; Mural's card lists data residency as unknown, and its verdict places residency only in an Enterprise feature with no region named.
  • You want seat prices published before you buy — pricing transparency leans Miro five judges to none (6.5 vs 5.3), and Mural's spread there reflects unpublished seat pricing.
  • Your workflow includes developer handoff — collaboration and handoff leans Miro five judges to none (6.2 vs 5.0); Miro documents a copy-to-Figma export route and a Marketplace app for table export, while Mural's spread reflects undocumented developer handoff.
  • You need a written exit path — Miro's terms state customer IP retention plus a 30-day export window after the subscription ends, which the skeptic credited; file ownership and portability leans Miro three judges to none with three ties (4.7 vs 3.8).
  • Design and prototyping capability decides your purchase — six judges lean Miro (4.8 vs 3.0); note the bench found no public information on shared component libraries, tokens, variants or auto layout for Miro.

Choose Mural if

  • Your deciding criterion is AI and content rights — the means tie at 6.2 with one judge leaning each way and four ties, and Mural's AI addendum excludes customer content from model training.
  • Your security team requires an admin switch for AI — Mural's addendum lets admins switch AI off.
  • You need contractual rights to your AI inputs and outputs — Mural's addendum gives customers rights to inputs and outputs.
  • Procurement requires stated certifications — GDPR compliance, SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 are stated for Mural, and a data processing addendum is incorporated by reference.
  • Your team's core work is workshop facilitation — the bench reads Mural as a facilitation canvas, with sticky notes, drawing, templates, mapping and workshop controls documented.

Read this comparison as one judge. Each weighs the same scores by what they care about.

The Frontend Engineer

Turns the designs into code and gets the ticket when they disagree. Wants an inspect mode without a paid seat, tokens exported in a documented format, components mapped to the code ones, and an API that reads the whole file rather than a screenshot of it.

Criterion by criterion

Design, prototyping & design systems

Miro

An infinite canvas with drag-and-drop shapes, text and thousands of templates, plus clickable prototypes that stakeholders can comment on directly, is well documented. What I don't find is the layer I build against: no documented reusable components with variants and properties, no colour, type or spacing tokens in a documented format, and no auto layout — the closest is a Brand Center that applies company fonts and colours across boards.

Mural

The evidence shows a facilitation canvas — sticky notes, drawing, images and icons, a content library, mapping and diagramming, with a rich set of workshop features like timers, voting and private mode. The "collaborative prototyping" page is a workshop template for teams, not an interactive prototype linking screens, and I found no public information on shared component libraries, variants, design tokens or themes. As someone who codes against design files, nothing here evidences a system I could consume.

Collaboration, review & developer handoff

Miro

Real-time co-editing, @mentions pinned to the exact part of the design, and comment, react and vote on prototypes are documented, and the MCP story genuinely interests me: a coding agent like Claude Code reads the prototype over MCP and generates a React app from it, with REST APIs on every plan and a marketplace plus developer platform. But the handoff basics are thin on the captured pages — no documented inspect view with measurements and asset export, no guest reviewers without a paid seat, and no version history or branching before changes reach the main board.

Mural

Real-time co-editing, comments with mentions that stay attached to objects, and well-documented roles — members, guests, and visitors in every plan with expiring links and ownership transfer — are all evidenced, with unlimited guests on the Business plan. What decides it for me is handoff: I found no public information on an inspect or developer view with measurements, version history, branching, or components linked to code; an API and SDK are defined in the terms and Teams and Slack integrations are named, but no issue-tracker or code tool integration appears on the captured pages.

Brand assets & governance

Miro

Brand Center is a real central kit: company fonts, colours, styles and branded custom templates that non-designers start boards from, automatic restyling of boards and presentations in brand colours, and admin insights monitoring template usage. I found no public information on locking brand elements, approval workflows for new assets, or licence, rights and expiry metadata on individual assets, and the brand guidelines offering is a template for documenting them rather than a governing layer.

Mural

The brand assets page documents Mural's own wordmark, symbol and hex colours for press use — that is the vendor's brand kit, not a library a customer builds for theirs. Templates and a content library are core features on all plans, and facilitators can lock individual objects or in bulk with rules for who may unlock, which serves workshop control. I found no public information on brand guidelines in the tool, tagging and search across assets, approval workflows, or rights and expiry metadata.

Files, formats & portability

Miro

The terms are honest about the exit: customer content may be exported for 30 days after the term ends, proactive account deletion removes content permanently, and the customer retains all IP in their content. There is a copy-to-Figma path with fully editable elements and a marketplace app that converts board contents into tables for export, but I found no documented whole-file download to a local copy, no open or documented file format, and no bulk export of a team's boards.

Mural

Export covers PDF, PNG, a PowerPoint outline, zipped HTML and data files, and CSV of sticky notes only — one mural at a time, members only, with export links expiring after five days — and the help centre states plainly that there is no way to switch a mural to another program, suggesting copy-paste as the workaround. The terms address cancellation: access runs to the end of the paid term and content may then be deleted under standard retention policies, though no timeline is given. No editable or documented file format, bulk export, or API that reads full file structure appears on the captured pages.

AI features & rights to the work

Miro

The AI terms are unusually explicit: customers own inputs and outputs, Enterprise plans require withdrawable consent before any training, self-serve plans get a documented means to object, and admins can block Miro AI per feature, block prompts containing source code, choose providers and models, or run AI on their own API key, with an audit trail of AI interactions. Indemnity for generated output is expressly excluded from covered claims and the training licence is perpetual and irrevocable, and beyond one page naming Microsoft as a provider I found no stated processing locations or labelling of generated content.

Mural

The AI Addendum excludes using customer content to train or develop models, gives the customer all rights in inputs and outputs (with a carve-out where output incorporates Mural materials), promises labelling of AI features in the product, and offers human-readable documentation of how the features work on request. Admin controls are real: workspace admins on Team+ or Business can disable AI, and company admins on Enterprise can enforce it on or off across workspaces, though the captured help pages give different figures for the Enterprise default. Anonymised and de-identified inputs may still be used to improve AI features, AI providers are referenced but not named, and I found no public information on processing location or any IP indemnity.

European sovereignty

Miro

EU data residency is stated as included on every plan including Free, an Amsterdam-based EU representative is named, a DPA is part of the agreement, and cross-border transfers rely on Standard Contractual Clauses. The contracting entity is RealtimeBoard Inc. under California law, and apart from one named AI provider and a referenced third-party provider list I found no published subprocessor locations or AI processing locations.

Mural

The contracting entity is Tactivos, Inc. dba Mural of San Francisco, under California governing law and exclusive venue in the Northern District of California, and the captured pages state nothing on where files or AI prompts are hosted or which subprocessors touch them. A data processing addendum is incorporated into the public terms with security measures in its Schedule F, GDPR and CCPA compliance and SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certifications are stated, and data residency and BYOK are listed as Enterprise features without naming any region. No EU entity, EU hosting or located subprocessor chain is evidenced anywhere on the pages I read.

Pricing transparency

Miro

Per-member prices are public for Free (€0), Starter at €8/month per member billed yearly and Business at €20/month per member billed yearly, with a full comparison table naming where SSO, audit logs, AI credits per member and MCP call limits land, plus public renewal terms with a 90-day non-renewal notice. Enterprise is custom pricing from 30 members, and the pages I read give no statement on how viewers or guests are billed, how added seats are trued up, or VAT treatment.

Mural

The pricing page publishes Free at $0 USD for unlimited members with three editable murals at a time and Business at $17.99 USD per member/month billed annually with SSO and unlimited guests, while Enterprise is contact-for-pricing and I found no public information on a price for the Team+ plan. Fees are stated as exclusive of taxes including VAT, and cancellation, downgrade, renewal notice and late-payment terms are all published in the terms of service. Tiered Limited and Full member types are mentioned in help articles without prices, and I found no public information on how added seats are billed, true-ups, or AI credit pricing.
