The short answer

Miro holds the higher mean in six of the seven criteria; Mural leads none. Design and prototyping (4.8 to 3.0) and sovereignty (5.0 to 2.7) each lean Miro six judges to none. Collaboration and handoff (6.2 to 5.0), pricing transparency (6.5 to 5.3) and brand asset governance (4.8 to 3.2) each lean Miro five to none with one tie. File ownership and portability (4.7 to 3.8) leans Miro three to none with three ties. The split is AI and content rights: means tie at 6.2, one judge each way, four ties — Mural's addendum excludes customer content from training and lets admins switch AI off, while Miro's AI terms are read as unusually explicit. Miro's card lists a US entity, EU residency optional, US CLOUD Act exposure; Mural's attributes read unknown. Five per-judge totals favor Miro, narrowest 5.1 to 4.9. We declare no winner; the splits are the finding.

Choose Miro if

  • You need EU data residency selectable on your plan — Miro's sovereignty card lists EU residency as optional and included on every plan; Mural's card lists data residency as unknown, and its verdict places residency only in an Enterprise feature with no region named.
  • You want seat prices published before you buy — pricing transparency leans Miro five judges to none (6.5 vs 5.3), and Mural's spread there reflects unpublished seat pricing.
  • Your workflow includes developer handoff — collaboration and handoff leans Miro five judges to none (6.2 vs 5.0); Miro documents a copy-to-Figma export route and a Marketplace app for table export, while Mural's spread reflects undocumented developer handoff.
  • You need a written exit path — Miro's terms state customer IP retention plus a 30-day export window after the subscription ends, which the skeptic credited; file ownership and portability leans Miro three judges to none with three ties (4.7 vs 3.8).
  • Design and prototyping capability decides your purchase — six judges lean Miro (4.8 vs 3.0); note the bench found no public information on shared component libraries, tokens, variants or auto layout for Miro.

Choose Mural if

  • Your deciding criterion is AI and content rights — the means tie at 6.2 with one judge leaning each way and four ties, and Mural's AI addendum excludes customer content from model training.
  • Your security team requires an admin switch for AI — Mural's addendum lets admins switch AI off.
  • You need contractual rights to your AI inputs and outputs — Mural's addendum gives customers rights to inputs and outputs.
  • Procurement requires stated certifications — GDPR compliance, SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 are stated for Mural, and a data processing addendum is incorporated by reference.
  • Your team's core work is workshop facilitation — the bench reads Mural as a facilitation canvas, with sticky notes, drawing, templates, mapping and workshop controls documented.

Read this comparison as one judge. Each weighs the same scores by what they care about.

The Brand Marketer

Keeps the brand consistent across twelve sales offices that make their own flyers. Wants locked templates non-designers can use, guidelines inside the tool, licence and expiry dates on every stock image, and a clear answer on whether a generated image may go on a trade-fair stand.

Criterion by criterion

Design, prototyping & design systems

Miro

The infinite canvas, 29 prototype templates and the AI prototype generator give us clickable, shareable prototypes, and Brand Center pushes our colours and font styling onto boards and presentations automatically. But I found no public information on shared component libraries, tokens, variants or auto layout, so this is templates-and-prototypes level rather than a governed design system.

Mural

This is a facilitation canvas, not a design-system tool: sticky notes, drawing with images and icons, a content library, templates and mapping are the named making features, and the 'collaborative prototyping' on offer is a workshop template from Voltage Control rather than clickable screens. We found no public information on reusable components, shared styles or tokens that would keep twelve offices' materials consistent. As a place to make things it sits at the basic canvas-with-templates level.

Collaboration, review & developer handoff

Miro

Real-time co-editing, @mentions pinned to images, and comment, react and vote directly on a shared prototype cover review, and the developer handoff is real: REST APIs on every plan, MCP integrations with Confluence, Jira and Claude Code, and a copy-to-Figma path with elements staying fully editable. I found no public information on guest reviewers without a paid seat, version restore, or an inspect view with measurements and asset export.

Mural

My sales offices could genuinely review a flyer here: real-time collaboration on a shared infinite canvas, comments pinned to the canvas or to objects with tagging and email or Slack notification, resolved-comment tracking, and a clear three-role model of members, guests and visitors, with visitors included in every plan. Outside access is governed through per-mural link settings, configurable visitor-link expiry, a workspace- or company-wide link-sharing switch, and multiple owners with transfer when someone leaves. We found no public information on version history with restore, branching, or a developer view with measurements and code handoff.

Brand assets & governance

Miro

Brand Center is the centrepiece: company fonts, colours, styles and templates in one place, one-click restyling of boards and presentations in line with the brand, custom templates carrying our visual guidelines, and admin insights monitoring template usage. What I cannot find is the one thing my twelve sales offices need — locking brand elements or restricting who edits templates — and we found no public information on licence, rights or expiry metadata on assets, approval workflows, or guidelines published inside the tool rather than as a fill-in template.

Mural

The facilitator lock is genuinely useful — lock individual or bulk objects and choose who may unlock — and together with the template library it gives a taste of locked templates for non-designers. The published brand-assets page is Mural's own wordmark, symbol and colour palette for press use, not a library for a customer's brand. We found no public information on a central customer brand kit, guidelines inside the tool, or licence, rights and expiry metadata on images, which is precisely what my stock-photo workflow needs.

Files, formats & portability

Miro

The terms promise export of customer content during the subscription or within 30 days after it ends, customers retain all rights in their content, prototype elements copy into Figma fully editable, and board data converts to tables for export via a marketplace app. I found no public information on vector or PDF export, bulk export of a team's files, a documented file format, or transfer of a removed user's files to the organisation.

Mural

Exports cover PDF, PNG, a PowerPoint outline, zipped HTML and data files, and CSV for sticky notes — one mural at a time, up to 14000 x 14000, with download links expiring after five days — and the help centre states there is no way to move a mural into another program as an editable file. The terms do address life after cancellation: access runs to the end of the paid term and content may then be deleted under standard retention policies. We found no public information on vector export or a documented, open file format.

AI features & rights to the work

Miro

The AI terms put output ownership in writing — the customer owns the output — so a generated campaign image is ours to put on a trade-fair stand in principle, and enterprise plans get withdrawable consent before inputs train the models, with admins able to gate AI per feature, block sensitive prompts, choose providers or use their own API key. However, indemnification explicitly excludes IP claims over generated output and the vendor does not warrant output will not infringe, and I found no public information on labelling, content credentials or stock and template licences stated per asset type.

Mural

The AI Addendum gives me most of what I ask for in writing: Mural does not use customer content to train or develop models, and the customer retains all rights, title and interest in inputs and outputs, except where output incorporates Mural materials — the written answer I need before a generated image goes on a trade-fair stand. Admins can switch AI off (company admins on Enterprise, with an enforced-for-all-workspaces option; workspace admins on Team+ and Business), and the addendum commits to in-product labelling, human oversight and bias monitoring. It stops short of the top level because the model providers and processing locations are unnamed, there is no IP indemnity for generated output, and the captured pages give different figures for the Enterprise default.

European sovereignty

Miro

EU data residency is listed as included on every plan, an EU representative stands in Amsterdam (RealtimeBoard BV), and the terms point to a DPA and Data Privacy Framework certification. But the contracting entity is RealtimeBoard Inc. dba Miro of San Francisco under California law, the AI features may share limited data with Microsoft, and I found no public information on a published subprocessor list with locations.

Mural

Every proven element is American: Tactivos, Inc. dba Mural is the contracting entity, under California law with exclusive venue in San Jose. The European side rests on a Data Processing Addendum incorporated into the public terms and stated GDPR compliance; Enterprise advertises 'data residency' without naming any region, and we found no public information on where files or AI prompts are stored or which subprocessors touch them.

Pricing transparency

Miro

Starter at €8/month per member and Business at €20/month per member, both billed yearly, are published with a comparison table naming where SAML SSO, audit logs, AI credits and the Enterprise Guard add-on begin, and the terms state the 30-day payment window, a 1.5% per month late charge, and 12-month auto-renewal with 90-day non-renewal notice. Enterprise pricing is custom, and I found no public information on viewer or guest billing, seat true-ups or VAT treatment.

Mural

Free is $0 USD for unlimited members with three editable murals at a time, and Business is $17.99 USD per member / month billed annually, with SSO, unlimited guests and the main features listed per plan; Enterprise is 'Contact for pricing'. The small print helps a buyer: fees are exclusive of taxes including VAT, prepaid fees are non-refundable, downgrades take effect at renewal, and annual subscribers get a renewal notice. I still cannot compute a full year: we found no public price for the Team+ plan or for the tiered Limited and Full member seats, and no detail on AI credit pricing or how added seats are billed.
