The short answer

The bench splits, and the split is the answer. Tally leads form building (7.0 vs 6.0, six judges to zero) and sovereignty (7.0 vs 5.8, five to zero); pricing transparency (7.0 vs 6.0, four judges to zero) and consent and data protection (6.8 vs 6.3, four judges to one) also lean Tally. Typeform leads analysis and reporting (5.2 against Tally's 4.0, five judges to zero) and hosting and administration (6.0 against 5.5, three to zero, three ties); collection and workflows splits at 6.5 for Tally against 6.7 for Typeform — three judges lean Typeform, two Tally, one tie. Weighted totals put Tally ahead for the market researcher, operations manager, HR lead, academic researcher and data protection officer; the skeptic's total is 6.1 for Typeform against 6 for Tally. Sovereignty attributes: data residency reads "EU only" for Tally, "EU optional" for Typeform, and both list subprocessor exposure "US CLOUD Act reach"; jurisdictions read BE and ES.

Choose Tally if

  • You build logic-heavy forms on a budget: conditional logic with no condition limits, nested condition groups, calculated fields, answer piping and multi-language support are documented as free, and six judges lean Tally on form building (7.0 vs 6.0).
  • Your data policy requires the data residency attribute to read "EU only": Tally lists that, while Typeform lists "EU optional" with the EU data center choice documented as Enterprise-only.
  • You must hand procurement a data processing agreement naming a Belgian legal entity: Tally's names Tally BV under Belgian law, with hosting stated as Google Cloud in a Belgian region and a published subprocessor table; four judges lean Tally on consent and data protection, one Typeform.
  • You want published plan prices before committing: pricing transparency leans Tally four judges to zero (7.0 vs 6.0), while Typeform's five-to-seven spread rests on Enterprise contact-sales gates — though the captured pages give different figures for Tally's paid plans.
  • Your needs match the operations manager, HR lead or data protection officer: weighted totals run 6.6 vs 5.9, 6.3 vs 5.7 and 6.6 vs 6.4 in Tally's favor.

Choose Typeform if

  • You need working analysis out of the box: analysis and reporting leans Typeform five judges to zero (5.2 vs 4.0), with AI topic and sentiment detection credited by everyday-reporting judges; Tally's documented analysis is live NPS scoring, drop-off metrics, an analytics API and PDF export, and the verdicts found no public information on cross-tabulation, filters, segments or SPSS and R exports.
  • Your collection spans channels and tools: 28 question types, links, embeds, a 25,000-contact database with CSV import, file uploads, webhooks, a public API and Zapier; collection and workflows means 6.7 vs 6.5 with three judges leaning Typeform, two Tally, one tie.
  • Your infrastructure standard is AWS: Typeform's hosting is documented on AWS, and hosting and administration leans Typeform three judges to zero with three ties (6.0 vs 5.5).
  • You weigh vendor claims hard: the skeptic's weighted total is 6.1 for Typeform against 6 for Tally.
  • Your contracts are governed through Spain: the legal entity jurisdiction attribute reads ES for Typeform (Typeform SL of Barcelona), against BE for Tally.

The Market Researcher

Runs customer and brand studies for a mid-sized consumer-goods company, three waves a year in four languages. Wants logic and quotas that keep the sample clean, invitations with reminders, cross-tabs and NPS without exporting to a spreadsheet first, and open answers grouped into themes before the board meeting.

Typeform

Criterion by criterion

Form & survey building

Tally

The logic engine is genuinely deep — nested all/any condition groups, six actions including jump-to-page and calculated values, formulas with field references, piping, hidden fields and answer randomisation, all documented as free — plus a hundred templates, custom CSS and themes, and version history up to 90 days. The multi-language claim is documented for translating the default form messages, and the captured pages give different figures for the count (40+, 45+, 50+). We found no public information on quotas inside logic, loops, or a stated accessibility standard.

Typeform

A no-code drag-and-drop builder with 28 question types, conditional logic and branching, piping via the recall feature, multilingual forms, a 3,000-plus template gallery and full branding control cover most of what my three waves a year need. For the research end, we found no public information on calculations or scoring, randomisation, quotas inside logic, reusable question libraries or a stated accessibility standard, which holds it below the advanced authoring tier.

Distribution, response collection & workflows

Tally

Links, three embed types, file uploads, payments and signatures are all documented, together with documented webhooks, a REST API, closing by date or response limit, and duplicate prevention on a unique identifier — good for keeping one response per panellist. But we found no public information on email invitations to managed contact lists with reminders, QR codes or offline collection, which is how I actually field three waves a year.

Typeform

Distribution covers share links, embeds, email and social, Zapier and a documented webhooks and public API layer, with a 25,000-contact database, CSV import, automations from contact lists and scheduled dates, payments, file uploads, email and SMS follow-ups, and built-in panel recruitment in the research flow. What I cannot see is invitations with reminders and unique links, form-level response quotas with closing rules, or offline collection — exactly the machinery that keeps a quota-controlled sample clean.

Survey analysis & reporting

Tally

NPS is a real strength — any 0–10 scale auto-calculates the score live with a Promoter/Passive/Detractor split — and completion and drop-off metrics are exposed via the analytics API. We found no public information on cross-tabulation, filters and segments, significance testing or weighting, and exports are documented as PDF plus a general response export rather than named CSV, Excel or SPSS formats. Open-text grouping happens only by piping responses into Claude or ChatGPT, not as native coding.

Typeform

Live results give completion rates, drop-off and answer patterns, filters, auto-generated shareable reports, automatic NPS scoring, and AI topic and sentiment detection that groups open answers — most of what I want before a board meeting. But we found no public information on cross-tabulation, significance testing, weighting, or SPSS and R exports, so my cross-tabs would still begin in a spreadsheet.

Consent, GDPR & respondent data

Tally

A no-signature data processing agreement with standard contractual clauses, audit rights and certified deletion; per-form automatic retention from minutes to years (a Business-plan feature); individual response deletion and export for erasure requests; encryption in transit and at rest; and a consent checkbox that must start empty. We found no public information on an anonymous mode that drops IP addresses — the product instead derives respondent country from IP — or on a named data protection officer or default cookie behaviour on forms.

Typeform

A published data processing agreement with SCCs, a named data protection officer, technical and organisational measures, and encryption in transit and at rest; surveys are anonymous by default with no IP collection, and a cookie consent widget exists. Retention with automatic deletion is shown mainly for inactive free accounts, respondent requests are handled by forwarding them to me rather than with in-product tools, and the cookie widget requires a separate vendor account on a higher plan.

Hosting choice, teams & portability

Tally

Forms and responses sit in the EU on Google Cloud under a Belgian entity, with custom domains and branding removal on Pro, unlimited workspaces and team members documented, a form importer for migration in, and responses fetchable by API. We found no public information on single sign-on, an audit log, per-folder or per-form roles (folder access follows workspace membership), or a self-hosted option.

Typeform

An EU data center, SSO and custom domains sit behind the Enterprise plan, while team collaboration with assigned roles, shared workspaces whose admins can access activity logs, a custom subdomain, branding removal and response download through the API are documented on standard plans. We found no public information on SAML-based user provisioning, self-hosting, per-form permissions, or an export of the forms themselves.

European sovereignty

Tally

Tally BV is Belgian, under Ghent jurisdiction, hosting is stated as EU on Google Cloud in a Belgian region, and a full subprocessor list with countries and opt-in flags is published alongside the data processing agreement. US providers sit in the chain for email notifications, payments and analytics, marked as touching submissions only when opted in, and the ISO and SOC 2 certifications named on the agreement page are referenced for third parties rather than asserted for Tally itself; we found no public information on ownership.

Typeform

The contracting entity is Typeform SL in Barcelona with a Spanish registry entry, a published DPA under Spanish law with SCCs, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certifications, and processing stated to happen primarily in the EEA, with a US or EU data center choice on Enterprise. The chain still runs through a US affiliate for engineering and support and hosting on AWS, the full subprocessor list sits behind an external help-centre link, and ownership is not stated on the captured pages.

Pricing transparency

Tally

The free tier is unlimited forms and submissions within fair usage guidelines, and Pro and Business prices are public with monthly and yearly billing and per-plan feature differences spelled out (branding removal, custom domains, code injection, version-history length, retention control). The captured pages give different figures for the plan prices ($29 and $89 a month on one page, €20 and €65 on another). We found no public information on VAT treatment or where the fair usage guidelines bite.

Typeform

Four plans are priced publicly — Basic at 25 EUR a month, Plus at 49, Business at 84 and Growth Flow at 242 after a 14-day trial — each with user counts, included responses and a maximum monthly response limit, plus priced action add-ons, a 30 percent yearly saving and a free tier, and terms stating responses beyond the limit are simply not collected. Enterprise, the only plan with SSO, EU hosting and custom domains, is contact sales, and we found no public information on VAT treatment, so I cannot compute a full annual cost from public pages alone.
