The written short answer is being updated after a re-evaluation. The scores below are current.

Read this comparison as one judge. Each weighs the same scores by what they care about.

The Field Supervisor

Supervises crews on sites with no reliable signal and no desks. Judges everything by whether it works in a basement at 6am: offline capture, a shared terminal, corrections a foreman can make without a support ticket. A cloud-only app is a tool that will be filled in from memory on Friday.

Toggl Track

Criterion by criterion

Capture in the real workplace

Clockify

There is a real spread of capture paths — timer, timesheet, web, desktop and mobile apps plus a shared kiosk with QR clock-in for limited users, offline tracking that syncs automatically on reconnect, and GPS on Pro. What I could not see: whether the kiosk itself keeps working offline, any stated limits on the GPS check-in, and the audit trail for corrections sits behind the Enterprise plan, so I found no public information on a foreman-level correction path with attributable change history.

Toggl Track

Timers run on web, mobile, desktop and browser plugins, with timesheet approvals and idle detection — fine for desk staff, but I found no public information on offline capture, a shared kiosk or terminal for a crew, or GPS and geofenced clock-in. Anyone working in a basement fills this in from memory on Friday.

Working-time law & audit record

Clockify

The attendance report logs start, end, breaks (if enabled), work time, capacity and overtime per person per day, which is a usable record of the working day, and overtime is calculated daily, weekly or monthly against a set capacity with a beta TOIL conversion carrying balances. I found no public information on daily-maximum or eleven-hour rest-period checks, a retention period, tamper-evident entries, or German recording-duty guidance; a change history appears only as an Enterprise audit log.

Toggl Track

I found no public information on break handling, rest periods, the daily maximum, or retention aimed at working-time records; the retention statements that do exist cover personal data like ninety-day logs and seven-year billing records. Idle detection is a nudge, not break enforcement, and nothing here reads as built for an inspection.

Absence & shift planning

Clockify

Policies cover sick leave, vacation, national holiday and half-days with balances and accruals, a shared PTO calendar and timeline, approval routing, and TOIL with rejected hours reverting; scheduling handles work, assignments and shifts. I found no public information on carry-over, pro-rata entitlement, per-location holiday calendars, substitution or swap workflows, or rest and coverage checks on published rosters.

Toggl Track

PTO, public holidays and flexible hours appear in the plans and a Time Off Pro add-on handles leave, but I found no public information on entitlement calculation, carry-over, sickness recording or any shift roster. What's planned here is tasks and Gantt-style views, not a duty roster a foreman publishes for a site.

Project, cost-centre & billing

Clockify

Client, project and task carry billable flags, task rates, budgets on billable projects, and the invoicing module imports only uninvoiced billable time and expenses with guards against double invoicing, recurring invoices, payment status and CSV, Excel and PDF export — with a named QuickBooks handoff and a Peppol e-invoicing add-on for European clients. The captured pages show no rate rules that survive a mid-project rate change and no cost-centre dimension by that name; custom fields exist only from Pro upward.

Toggl Track

This is home ground: billable rates from Starter upward, labor costs and profitability reports, fixed-fee projects, estimates against actuals, and timesheet approvals behind the numbers. I found no public information on cost-centre structure, budget warnings or a handoff into a named invoicing system — the exports shown are generic CSV and PDF.

Payroll handoff

Clockify

The QuickBooks Payroll add-on is a vendor-maintained, separately priced integration pushing user, date, project, duration and billable status, and the attendance report exports overtime, breaks and time off to CSV or Excel. For a German payroll run I found no public information on DATEV or any Lohn und Gehalt system, on night, Sunday and holiday surcharges, or on a lock step before transmission.

Toggl Track

I found no public information on a payroll handoff — no named system, no defined format, no surcharge handling, no lock step. All that's shown is generic CSV and PDF export, so the month leaves as a file somebody retypes.

European sovereignty

Clockify

The contracting and copyright entity is CAKE.com Inc., a non-EU company, and I found no public information on the hosting region or any subprocessor list. "Data region" appears only as a Pro-plan feature and the bundle note says it is not included, so where the crews' time data actually sits is unevidenced.

Toggl Track

The privacy policy states processing operations in Estonia with Toggl OÜ as the default processor, and transfer mechanisms (adequacy decisions, contractual clauses with impact assessments) are spelled out. Against that stand a Delaware contracting option, a sub-processors page whose contents are not among the captured pages, and no named data-centre provider with its certification.

Pricing transparency

Clockify

Every tier carries a public per-seat price with the billing period stated (Free at €0 for up to five users; Basic, Standard, Pro and Enterprise each with annual and monthly figures), and the QuickBooks add-on is priced at $6.99 per month for the whole workspace. Kiosk limited-user seats carry a separate fee with no figure shown, VAT treatment and minimum term are unstated, and the captured pages give different figures for the per-user price ($3.99 in one place, €3.99 in another), so the annual invoice is close but not fully computable.

Toggl Track

Starter and Premium are priced publicly per user per month ($9 and $16) with the annual deal stated as four months free, plus a $0 tier and a feature-comparison page. But the free tier is quoted as free "for a limited number of users" without the number, Enterprise is contact-sales, and the add-ons — Time Off Pro, expert onboarding — carry no price I could find, with VAT treatment and minimum term unstated.
